Kinloch, a grand estate, is nestled on 1,400 acres in Essex
County, Virginia near Tappahannock, in the heart of “River
Country”. Past…
The original antebellum style Mansion was built in 1843 by
Planter/Politician, Charles Baylor. From the observation deck
of its roof, one could view the six surrounding counties as
well as the Rappahannock River Valley.
The
mansion stood four stories tall, had 21 rooms and 18 fireplaces.
One can only imagine the grand parties, the exciting fox hunts
and other events that recall a bygone era, taking place on
these elegant grounds.
In the late 1940’s Kinloch caught fire and burned to
the ground.
Merging
eras…
After
Kinloch burned, a new home which was a modern day marvel at
the time, was erected by renowned architect Charles Goodwin.
Bricks from the Mansion were used in the new Manor House and
can be seen on the walkways, the exterior of the home as well
as the paved pavilion. A sundial that was also originally
in the gardens of Kinloch was saved and is now located in
the circular drive of the Manor Home. The inscription reads:
"Serene I stand among ye flowers and only count the sunny
hours for me dark days do not exist I am a brazen old optimist".
This premier 7,000 Sq. ft brick home was built when “Old
Hollywood” stars such as Rita Hayworth, Joan Crawford
and Gregory Peck were in their heyday and glamour was key.
Present…
Kinloch
now offers guests the best of both worlds; spectacular grounds
featuring massive oaks, magnolias, and boxwoods circa 1843
and posh modern day amenities in the glamorous 1940’s
era home completely updated in 2005.
Future…
Come,
visit Kinloch and rediscover Southern hospitality in an elegant
atmosphere recalling days long past and offering days yet
to come. |
